Plans for new versions of Joomla

The Joomla community is under going a series of updates over the next year.

Joomla is presently in version 1.6 and has been available for 6 months. On July 19, 2011 Joomla will be changing to version 1.7 while Version 1.8 is scheduled for release in January 2012.
All the websites that dc2 manages are presently version 1.5.
Will we be changing? No
Why? Joomla 1.5 will continued to be supported by the Joomla community with security updates until April 2012 after the release of Joomal 1.8. Regardless of our upgrade cycle, all sites and databases need to be converted when changing versions. Had we gone the segmented upgrade cycle, our sites would have to be modified for version 1.6, 1.7 and finally 1.8 (3 instances of significant upgrading and template modifications in 2 years). Instead, our plan is to go through the same necessary site conversion only once in 2012 when Joomla 1.8 is released. As well, considering many 3rd party components and templates are still compatible to 1.5 only reinforces our migration plans.
That being said, now is a very good time for our clients to think about moving to Joomla 1.8 in 2012. They will need to set aside some budget for site upgrades and it may be a good time to also consider a redesign as part of the upgrade process. We will be reviewing plans with our clients in the months to come in order to be ready for the moves in 2012.
